Joco dancers performing on stage

Frequently Asked Questions

Joining Joco

Which ages do you teach?

We welcome children from Pre-School age and up! We have classes to suit every level, from those finding their feet to those preparing for professional training.

The youngest Joco-ers can start with Little Dancers, a fun movement class where a parent or carer stays with them, or Pre-School Ballet, both on Friday mornings. From Reception onwards, children can join our main after-school and Saturday classes in all our styles.

Does my child need any dance experience?

No. Many of our students join us having never danced before. Our classes are warm and welcoming and we will help you choose classes where your child can flourish.

Can my child try a class first?

Yes! Your child’s first class is a free trial. If they would like to carry on, you only pay from their next class to the end of that term. To book a trial, email team@jocodance.com.

How do I join?

After the free trial just send us an email to let us know how it went, and we will do the rest! We will send you a welcome pack with all the info.

How do you decide which class my child goes in?

Each class has an age guide, but we are more flexible than school year groups. We place each child where we think they will flourish, and we keep an eye on how they’re getting on to make sure the class is right for them. If you would like to talk about your child’s class, just let us know.

Which styles do you teach?

Ballet, Tap, Modern Jazz (including contemporary and lyrical styles), commercial Street Dance, Musical Theatre, Singing and Drama, plus Pointe for older ballet students. We also offer LAMDA classes, private lessons, and audition and self-tape preparation. See every class on our Classes & Prices page.

Do you teach boys?

Absolutely! All of our classes are open to boys and girls.

Classes and Venues

Where are your classes held?

We teach at two venues in Ashtead, Surrey:

  • Ashtead Studio, our purpose-built, air-conditioned studio at Ashtead Squash and Tennis Club, 39 Skinners Lane, Ashtead KT21 2NN. Free parking.
  • The Dell Centre, Park Lane, Ashtead KT21 1EJ.

Most classes are at Ashtead Studio. Our Wednesday classes and Joco Theatre School on Saturday mornings are at The Dell Centre. The venue for each class is shown on our Classes & Prices page, and directions are on Contact & Venues.

When do classes run?

Classes run after school from Monday to Friday, on Saturday mornings, and on Friday mornings for pre-school children. We teach in term time and close for half terms and school holidays. You will find this term’s dates at the top of our Classes & Prices page.

What is Joco Theatre School?

Joco Theatre School runs on Saturday mornings from 9am to 12pm at The Dell Centre and is for children in Year 2 and above. Students learn in three age groups with classes in dance, singing and drama with three specialised teachers.

Can I watch my child's class?

Yes, at the end of every term we hold Watching Week, when family members are invited in to see their Joco-er in action.

Do you support children with special educational needs?

Everyone is welcome at Joco, and we always do our very best to help every student take part in classes alongside their friends. Unfortunately we are unable to provide or accommodate one-to-one support in our classes. Please talk to us about your child’s needs before they start.

  • 1 hour classes: £10

Uniform

What does my child need to wear?

All uniform is listed on our Uniforms page. Most items can be ordered from dancinginthestreet.com. We chose this supplier because its items are good value, high quality and meet exam requirements.

To order Joco branded items, such as T-shirts, hoodies and joggers, email team@jocodance.com with your child’s name, the items you need and their sizes.

Exams, Shows and Performing

Do you offer exams?

Yes! We offer IDTA dance and LAMDA drama exams, where our students consistently achieve outstanding results.

Will my child get to perform?

Yes. In our Joco Shows every student has the chance to perform on stage in front of family and friends. A few times a year we also invite some students to take part in performing arts festivals, and each year Joco children take part in our local pantomime.

How are students chosen for panto, festivals and agents?

For pantomime performances and work with agents, the pantomime producers or agents give us very specific requirements, such as age and height. We don’t hold auditions for these. Instead we offer the opportunity to families based on those requirements, which avoids unnecessary competition and discord between students. Festival places are offered to students we are confident will enjoy and benefit from the experience.

If my child is keen to pursue future performing arts opportunities, can Joco help?

Yes. Through our close links with trusted performing arts agencies, Joco students have performed in West End and international shows with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Ballet and Opera, with London Children’s Ballet, and in film and television.

Our students have also won places at The Royal Ballet School, Central School of Ballet, Elmhurst Ballet School, Tring Park, Guildford School of Acting, The BRIT School, Mountview and Bird College, among others. We offer audition and self-tape preparation and help with applications for further training.

Safety and Wellbeing

Are your teachers DBS checked?

Yes. All of our teachers are Enhanced DBS checked. We have a full Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy, you can read the policy on our Policies page.

Do you take photos of the children?

Our shows are filmed and photographed for the families of the students taking part. We only share images on our website or social media if you have opted in, and we never attach students’ names. You can change your mind at any time. Our GDPR Privacy Notice has the full details.
